Appendix I: Installation Examples
This Appendix goes through some example installations for your Xbox. I’ve done a couple of different examples for each type of mod (chip or softmod) so that you can decide which one suits what you want.
Installations for Modchip Users
Example #1 - Modchip Setup with Hacked Dashboard
This is a standard installation for a virgin HDD that has not been formatted for the Xbox, or an exsisting HDD that you want to update. You can always skip the step one if your HDD is already formatted. This setup will install the MS Dash, a Hacked Dashboard, Applications, and Emulators.
1) The first time AID boots the UnleashX system (which is the backbone of AID) will automatically prompt to Format a virgin HDD. Just follow the on-screen prompts and you shouldn’t have any problem at all. Once this is done, reboot your Xbox (this ensures that the Modchip can see the drive properly on boot).
2) The first thing to do with a brand new HDD is to make sure any extra drives (F and G) are properly formatted. Use the Format / Prepare HDD section to Format and prepare the F and G partitions. If they are already formatted / prepared you don’t need to format them again. If this a HDD that has been in use in an Xbox, you may want to Format C drive too if you want too so that you can re-install the MS Dash (especially older boxes).
3) Next you have to install the MS Dash on your C Drive. You can find the option to do this in the main menu.
4) Now it’s time to decide what dashboard you want your modchip to boot. Now, depending on the paths your BIOS has to boot from, you want to install this first program there (usually it’s C, E, or F). This is where you install your hacked dashboard. Go to the Install Dashboards section again and select the drive you want to install it to. Next, select the Dashboard you want. Finally it will ask what partitions you have on your Xbox. If you have a retail HDD you would only select the retail (E) option, and so on.
5) Next it’s time to install some apps. This small list is like an essential installation:
Dvd2XboX - Enigmah NTSC-PAL Video Switcher - DVD-X
Go to the Install Applications section and select the drive and apps your want. A good practice is to store the Apps on E (Retail HDDs will have no other choice), and then keep F and G Drives for Games / Media etc.
6) Lastly, if you wish, you can install some Emulators. Go to the Install Emulators section to install these (if you can) to F Drive so you have storage room for Roms, otherwise install to E if you have no other choice.
All done...
Example #2 - Modchip Setup with Xselect
This installation is a little bit more advance. It can be used on a virgin HDD that has not been formatted for the Xbox, or an exsisting HDD that you want to update. You can always skip the step one if your HDD is already formatted. This setup will install the MS Dash, XSelect, Applications, and Emulators.
4) Now it’s time to decide where to install Xselect. Now, depending on the paths your BIOS has to boot from, you want to install this first program there (usually it’s C or F). This is where XSelect must be installed. Go to the Advanced Options section, select Install XSelect, then where you want to install it to.
5) Next it’s time to install your main programs (your dashboard and your apps).
Make sure that you also install the Dashboards from the Install Applications section, as XSelect can easily be pointed to their location. You can choose either to have the network set up for a Static or DHCP connection as well.
6) Lastly, if you wish, you can install some Emulators. Go to the Install Emulators section to install these (if you can) to F Drive so you have storage room for Roms, otherwise install to E if you have no other choice.
7) Reboot your Xbox. You’ll notice that XSelect will come up for the first time asking you to select the paths that you want to boot for each button (A,B,X,Y,U,D,L,R). It will also ask for a path that will boot if no button is pressed (usually have this as your default dashboard). Here’s an example setup on how you could use XSelect.
No Button - Default Dash (UnleashX in my case)
A Button - EvoX Dashboard
B Button - Xbox Media Center
X Button - DVD-X
Y Button - Dvd2Xbox
Once you have configured XSelect, restart your Xbox and you’re all done.
Installations for Softmod Users
PLEASE NOTE: Your Xbox must be already softmodded in order to use the AID disc.
Example #3 - SID 3.1: Single Boot Softmod with a Hacked Dashboard
1) Go to the Install Softmods, and select the SID 3.1 NKpatcher System. Now, select what kind of softmod system you want to use.
PBL: An older form of softmod, but still handy due to the fact it can load modified BIOS ROM files. This is a way you could turn a retail Xbox into a Debug Xbox.
NKpatcher: This is a more advanced (and newer) type of sofmod, Even though it doesn’t use a BIOS file, it still contains most of the features that you would find in a BIOS file, including many features that it doesn’t.
2) If you have selected NKpatcher, next select the Single Boot option. This will take you to the option where you decide on where you will have the softmod boot. Remember to have a dashboard installed there before you reboot (especially if you had it on C previously, as you will have to install it again due to this option formatting C drive). Proceed to Step 4 after this is done.
3) If you selected PBL, select the Single Boot option. This will automatically install the first portion of the PBL system. You would have noticed that there was a Install BIOS #1 and Install BIOS #2 option where the boot options were. Go to #1 and select the BIOS you want to use to boot your Xbox.
4) Once this is done, go back to the start of the Install Softmods section. You will find the option called Patch MS 5960. Use this to restore the MS dash to C drive.
5) Now it’s time to decide what dashboard you want your modchip to boot. Now, depending on the paths your BIOS has to boot from, you want to install this first program there (usually it’s C, E, or F). This is where you install your hacked dashboard. Go to the Install Dashboards (Softmod) section again and select the drive you want to install it to. Next, select the Dashboard you want. Finally it will ask what partitions you have on your Xbox. If you have a retail HDD you would only select the retail (E) option, and so on.
6) Next it’s time to install some apps.
7) Lastly, if you wish, you can install some Emulators. Go to the Install Emulators section to install these (if you can) to F Drive so you have storage room for Roms, otherwise install to E if you have no other choice.
All done... This section can be altered to suit a XSelect installation as well, just follow from step 5 in Example 2, replacing the Install Dashbords option with the Install Dashboards (Soft) option.
Example #4 - SID 3.1: Dual-Boot Softmod with Hacked Dashboard
1) Go to the Install Softmods, and select the SID 3.1 NKpatcher System. Now, select what kind of softmod system you want to use. There is a small definition on the two types of softmods available.
2) If you have selected NKpatcher, next select the Dual Boot option. This will take you to the option where you decide on how you want your Xbox to boot. Here are the configurations that are available to you:
Install Hacked Dash Loader
Boot Hacked Dash / MS Dash
Boot Hacked Dash / Softmod Menu
Boot MS Dash / Hacked Dash
Boot MS Dash / Softmod Menu
Boot Softmod Menu / Hacked Dash
Boot Softmod Menu / MS Dash
If you select to use a Hacked Dash, remember to install the Hacked Dash Loader also, otherwise the Hacked Dash won’t boot. Also, remember to have a dashboard installed there before you reboot (especially if you had it on C previously, as you will have to install it again due to this option formatting C drive). Proceed to Step 4 after this is done.
3) If you selected PBL, select the Dual Boot option. This will automatically install the first portion of the PBL system. You would have noticed that there was a Install BIOS #1 and Install BIOS #2 option where the boot options were. BIOS #1 is for your normal boot, and BIOS #2 is for your tray-open boot.
